Restorative or Internally Directed Movement

Internally directed movement is movement done to increase kinesthetic awareness or the “felt sense” of movement in an individual. The movement is process oriented rather than goal oriented and is done with an nonjudgmental inwardly directed focus or meditative mindset. The quality of the movement ideally should be flowing, controlled and without strain or undue effort. The intention is movement that demonstrates a sense of ease and efficiency without excess effort.

The benefits of internally directed movement include: the restoration of balance around the joints, the release of tight or overworked muscles, the increase of blood flow to the muscle tissue and the release of the body’s holding patterns of stress and tension. The breath patterns and the movements facilitate deep relaxation and act as a restorative technique for dancers and other athletes, as well as the general public.

Remember: Restorative movement helps dancers prevent injuries and also can act as a form of moving meditation that helps calm and focus the mind. The balanced body is a dynamic process-creating a higher level of fitness, energy and enjoyment through movement. We release patterns that do not serve us and come to know the foundations that sustain and support us.

Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional and mental states.
